CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Early inning woes plagued the Blazers for the second straight game as the UAB baseball team fell 7-1 to Charlotte on Thursday night at Hayes Field.
"I thought it was a combination of two thing: Charlotte's starting pitcher was very, very good and we are not playing very well right now," head coach Brian Shoop said. "The hopeful part is that you are always one day away from turning it around and we will hope for that tomorrow."
Charlotte (15-10, 5-2) took a lead in the first inning that it would not relinquish. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, Drew Ober singled to right center to score Jackson Mims, who reached base after being hit by a pitch, and give the 49ers a 1-0 lead.
Zack Smith hit a one-out single in the second and advanced 90-feet after Tanner Graham hit his second batter of the games. Reece Hampton walked before Graham hit his third batter of the game giving Charlotte bases loaded with two outs. Harris Yett singled into left field scoring Smith and Hampton and extended the lead to 3-0.
UAB (10-14, 3-4) cut into the lead in the fifth inning as Zack Davis was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning. Antonio Ralat grounded out to move Davis to second before Price Visintainer singled to right center scoring Davis to make the game 3-1.
Yett picked up his third hit of the game in the bottom half of the fifth with a deep solo home run to center to put the 49ers back up by three.
Charlotte tacked on three runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth for its final runs of the game and to take game one of the series.
Josh Maciejewski earned his fourth win of the season for the 49ers as the lefty went 8.1 innings and allowed just one run on five hits with six strikeouts. Tanner Graham took the loss for the Blazers.
Colton Schultz finished the night 2-for-4 at the plate to extend his hitting streak to six games while also picking up his fifth multi-hit game of the season. Visintainer also tacked on two hits for UAB going 2-for-4 with a RBI marking his third multi-hit game of the season.
The two squads meet for game two on Friday at 4 p.m. CT.
UAB will come back to Regions Field on Tuesday night to face the Birmingham Barons at Regions Field. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
