BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Six runs scored over the first two innings gave Samford all it would need to defeat the UAB baseball team 8-2 on Tuesday night at Regions Field.
"In the first two innings we walked five, hit two, made two errors and threw two or three wild pitches," head coach Brian Shoop said. "After that it was even game. Sylvester Toe took a giant step forward, Matthew Calvert was good. But when you spot them six runs, they only had four or five hits the whole night, that's a pretty tough whole to come out of."
Samford (12-14) scored two runs in the first with two outs. Brooks Carlson reached base on an error followed by an Anthony Mulrine single to left field. Austin Edens singled up the middle scoring Carlson and Mulrine as the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead.
Samford tacked on four more runs in the second inning on one hit and one error to take a 6-0 lead.
Thomas Johns was hit by a pitch with one-out before Antonio Ralat walked and Price Visintainer was hit by another pitch to load bases in the sixth inning. Blake Johnson grounded into a fielder's choice back to the pitcher as Johns was out at home on the play. Luke Eigsti struck out for the final out of the inning to end the frame.
UAB (10-13) cut into the Bulldog lead scoring two runs in the seventh inning. Tyler Tolbert was hit by a pitch with one out and moved up to second when Colton Schultz reached base on an error. Pharis reached base on another fielder's choice as Schultz got out on the play. Johns doubled to center field scoring Tolbert and Pharis as UAB trailed 7-2.
The Bulldogs added another run in the eighth inning as Connor Burns hit a leadoff single up the middle and scored one batter later when a ball hit back to the pitcher got away on the throw as Samford led 8-2.
Josh Rich (1-3) earned his first win of the season for the Bulldogs while Cole Whitman (0-3) suffered the loss for the Blazers.
Schultz extended his team-best hit streak to six games as he went 1-for-five at the plate. Pharis added two hits for the Blazers tallying his seventh multi-hit game of the season.
UAB picks back up Conference USA play this weekend with a trip to Charlotte. The Blazers and the 49ers kick off the three-game series on Thursday with first pitch set for 5 p.m. CT.
