Blazers Top Mercer for Fourth Straight Win

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women's tennis team ran its winning streak to four after turning in a 6-1 victory over Mercer on Wednesday afternoon at George Ward Park.
UAB (10-9) built a 1-0 lead by rallying to win the final two doubles matches after Mercer won at No. 3 behind a 6-3 victory from Marie Mottet and Lucia Gutierrez. Sophie Dodds and Alexandra Shchipakina answered with a 6-4 win over Grace Korta and Katie Sidor at No. 1, and Marlene Herrmann and Hana Sisirak followed with a 6-4 victory over Christie Cesarini and Celine Schepers at No. 2 to clinch the point.
Dodds gave UAB a 2-0 lead when she bested Schepers 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 3. Singles position, while Jana Hecking defeated Maeva Roquebert 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 to push the lead to 3-0.
Dominika Hrabalova sealed the win for UAB following her 6-3, 6-2 victory over Gutierrez at No. 6.
"We picked up a solid win over a feisty Mercer team today," UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. "It was very difficult to feel like we were playing well because of the wind, but we showed our toughness and embraced the conditions."
Herrmann later posted her eighth consecutive singles win when she downed Mottet 6-3, 2-6, 10-6 at No. 2. Megan Bertrands was also victorious for UAB with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-5 win over Korta at No. 3.
UAB returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. when the Blazers host Jackson State at George Ward Park.
