Blazers Down Jackson State to Capture Fifth Straight Win

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women's tennis team won its fifth consecutive match following a 4-0 shutout of Jackson State Saturday afternoon at George Ward Park.
UAB (11-9) took the first two doubles matches to build a 1-0 lead, beginning with a 6-0 win by Marlene Herrmann and Dominika Hrabalova over Ariel Dickson and Nina Zhang at No. 3. Jana Hecking and Hana Sisirak followed with a 6-1 win against Oni Jones and Daria Butorina at No. 2 to clinch the point.
Sophie Dodds gave UAB a 2-0 lead when she defeated Chloe Gorvreau 6-0, 6-0 in singles from the No. 3 position. Hecking accounted for the Blazers' third point of the match after she downed Jones 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5.
Herrmann sealed the shutout for UAB and won her ninth consecutive singles match in the process when she beat Lucia Solis 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.
"We did a good job of being professional while focusing on the process of what we need to do to get better," UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. "Now we have to get ready for what should be a fun day playing alongside our men's team tomorrow."
UAB plays its final home match of the season Sunday at noon when the Blazers host Alabama A&M at George Ward Park. The UAB men's team will also face Alabama A&M at noon at George Ward Park.
