BOONE, N.C. – The UAB women's tennis team opened its three-match road trip in style with a 5-2 victory over No. 100 Appalachian State Tuesday afternoon at Deer Valley Racquet Club.
The win also snapped the Mountaineers' five-match unbeaten streak and was their first loss at home this season.
Marlene Herrmann and Alexandra Shchipakina posted a 6-1 doubles victory at No. 2 for the Blazers, but Appalachian State (8-5) won the other two matches to build a 1-0 lead.
Shchipakina continued her winning ways in singles action and pulled UAB even with her 7-5, 6-1 victory over Maria Jose Zacarias at No. 1. Taylor Bygrave put Appalachian back in front after she defeated Megan Bertrands 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3.
Herrmann picked up her second win of the match and tied the score 2-2 with her 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory over Teodora Sevo at No. 2. Sonia Grzywocz followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Melissa Machado at No. 6, and Sophie Dodds clinched the match when she downed Heidi Swope 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4.
Jana Hecking bested Rebecca Morse 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 5 to pick up her sixth singles win of the season.
"This was such a tough, gutsy win and I am so proud of the team we are becoming," UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. "Playing at a high altitude presents a significant home court advantage, but we gutted our way to a big win over a team that is having a great season."
UAB returns to action Thursday at 1 p.m. when the Blazers travel to Elon, N.C., to take on Elon.
