ELON, N.C. – The UAB women's tennis team rallied from two points down en route to a 4-3 victory over Elon Thursday afternoon from the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Elon gave itself an early advantage by winning the first doubles match with a 6-0 victory at No. 3, but UAB answered by winning the next two matches to win the point and build a 1-0 lead. Sophie Dodds and Alexandra Shchipakina started the comeback with a 6-3 win at No. 2 over Kirsten Ward and Suzanne Zenoni, and Marlene Herrmann and Sonia Grzywocz followed with a 6-2 win over Alex Koniaev and Maria Paraja at No. 1 to clinch the point.
Olivia Lucas pulled Elon even after she posted a 6-2, 6-0 singles victory over Shchipakina at the No. 1 position, while Ward captured the second consecutive win for the Phoenix with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Dominika Hrabalova at No. 6.
Hermann answered for UAB with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Zenoni at No. 2 for her fifth straight singles victory. Elon, however, regained the lead and went ahead 3-2 when Paraja downed Dodds 7-6, 6-4 at No. 3.
Jana Hecking kept UAB alive and extended the match with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Montana Moore at No. 5. In the final match, Megan Bertrands fell behind in the first set but answered by taking the final two sets en route to a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Koniaev to complete the comeback for the Blazers.
"We showed so much toughness and grit again today," UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. "I am so proud of our resilience and courage under pressure. Our freshmen did a great job of fighting back and never giving up to help us get this win."
UAB returns to action Friday at 10 a.m. (CT) when the Blazers face Conference USA foe Charlotte to close a three-match road trip.
