MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The UAB women's tennis team suffered a 4-0 defeat to No. 10 Wake Forest on Friday in the opening match of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic at the O'Connor Tennis Center.
Three Blazers won a set in their respective matches against one of the best teams in the country. Freshman Megan Bertrands opened her match with a 6-3 win over Anna Ulyashchenko at the No. 2 position, and Dominika Hrabalova was also victorious in her first set with a 6-3 win against Alexis Franco at No. 6.
Jana Hecking took set two, 6-4, from Joanna Zalewski at No. 4, but was unable to continue and play for the point because the match had already concluded.
"Our three freshmen were in a position to possibly win their singles matches when play was stopped," UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. "Megan and Dominika were up a set and Jana was just starting a third. I think it shows that we have the potential to be a really good team."
The Wake Forest tandem of Emma Davis and Alexis Franco won the first doubles match of the morning with a 6-3 victory over Sophie Dodds and Hrabalova at No. 2. Eliza Omirou and Ulyashchenko, who are ranked No. 31 in the NCAA in doubles, clinched the point for the Demon Deacons with a 6-2 win over Marlene Herrmann and Sonia Grzywocz at No. 1.
No. 33 Emma Davis put Wake Forest ahead 2-0 following her 6-3, 6-1 victory over Alexandra Shchipakina at No. 1, and M.C. Meredith scored the third point for the Demon Deacons with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Dodds at the No. 5 position.
Omirou clinched the match for Wake Forest when she downed Herrmann 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2.
"Our hope was to gain experience from facing one of the best teams in the nation and I think we did that," Tjia added.
UAB returns to action Saturday at 8:30 a.m. when the Blazers face Utah in the consolation bracket. Doubles will be played Friday at 3:30 p.m.
