Blazers Fall to Utah at Blue Gray Tennis Classic

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The UAB women's tennis team suffered a 4-1 defeat to Utah on Saturday in its second match of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic at the O'Connor Tennis Center.
Jana Hecking was victorious 6-1, 6-0 over Victoria Robertson at No. 4 for UAB en route to her second consecutive singles victory. Sophomore Marlene Herrmann opened her match with a 6-0 win over Brianna Chisolm at the No. 2 position, and Alexandra Shchipakina was also victorious in her second set with a 6-2 win against Alexia Petrovic at No. 1. Both Herrmann and Shchipakina were winning the third set before the match was stopped.
"The match was much closer than the score indicated for a second straight day," UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. "We were winning the third set and No. 1 and No. 2 when the match ended."
Utah took the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 to open up a 1-0 lead. The Utes would go on to capture singles wins at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 to seal the victory and advance in the consolation bracket.
"We are starting to see that when we are all on the same page, we are capable of competing with the best teams in the nation," Tjia added. "Now we have to regroup immediately to face a tough Yale team later today.:
UAB returns to action later today when the Blazers face Yale in the match final of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic.
