UAB Rides Pitching to a Win Over In-State Foe Troy

TROY, Ala. – Emily Kachel pitched UAB to a 1-0 win over in-state foe Troy in Game Two of the Trojan Classic Friday night at the Troy Softball Complex.
UAB (4-8) went with the freshman Kachel against the Trojans and she put on a magnificent pitching performance. Kachel allowed only one hit through the first six innings of play while striking out nine batters. Just one strikeout shy of her career high.
Kachel was so dominant, Troy (7-4) got its first runner of the game on base in the third inning only because of a dropped third strike that rolled all the way to the backstop giving the Troy batter enough time to beat out the throw to first. Later in the same inning, the Trojans finally broke through with a hit which due to a fielding error at first base put runners in scoring position with two out.
Tonight though, it wouldn't matter. Kachel came right back and struck out the next batter swinging on four pitches and the Troy threat was over as quickly as it had started.
Kachel improves to 4-3 on the year and has won her last three starts. Over those three games she has gone the distance twice, against Weber State and Troy, recorded 21 strikeouts, walked only two batters, allowed just 13 hits and has given up three runs.
She earned her first career shutout tonight against Troy.
For as well as Kachel pitched, she couldn't have gotten the win without a little run support and she got that from second baseman Analyse Petree. In the bottom of the first with two outs, Petree stepped into the batters' box and took the first pitch she saw for a ride over the left field wall for a solo home run.
That was all the run support that was needed as Kachel did the rest in absolutely shutting down the Troy offense. The Trojans did finally get a second hit in the game but that came in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and was a weak single to the right side.
The Blazers however, managed seven hits on the night but struggled with stringing them together and ultimately left seven runners on base.
Rachel Rogers led UAB with two hits on the night including hitting her third double of the season off the left field wall.
