TROY, Ala. – UAB went 1-1 on Day Two of the Trojan Classic as the Blazers picked up a win against Tennessee Tech 8-1 but fell to Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville 5-2 in the second game of the day.
Freshman Bailie Barnes made her first collegiate start in Game One against Tennessee Tech and looked outstanding. Barnes allowed just five hits and one run as she stifled the Golden Eagles offense all day. The Beauregard, Ala. native went the distance picking up the first win and complete game of her young career.
Barnes struck out two batters while walking none and improves to 1-1 on the year.
UAB (5-9) had an offensive outburst against Tennessee Tech that along with the dominate pitching performance, spurred the Blazers to victory. The Green and Gold scored a run in the first, three runs in the third, three in the sixth and added a run late in the seventh.
Katelyn Prater and Rachel Rogers got the scoring started in the first as Prater reached on a bunt single. Destini England drew a walk that advanced Prater to second and Rogers hit a single up the middle that scored Prater from second.
In the third, England reached on a slap single to the pitcher but advanced all the way to third on a throwing error by the pitcher. Rogers drew a walk to put runners on the corners with two out as Madison Millsaps stepped to the plate.
Millsaps smacked a double to center field that scored England and Rogers. Sarah Crawford was up to bat next and hit a double to right center to score Millsaps and give the Blazers a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth.
Tennessee Tech cut into the lead in the bottom half of the fifth as they pushed across one run. The Golden Eagles' Hallie Davis led off the fifth with a double down the left field line and was moved to third on a single to center field.
Sydney Love-Baker singled to left field in the next at-bat to score Davis from third and cut the lead down to 4-1. While it looked that Tennessee Tech was poised to put more runs on the board, Barnes got three straight outs to end the inning and the threat.
The Blazers came right back in the top half of the sixth as Natalie Erwin hit a leadoff home run over the left center field fence to push the lead back out to four runs. Haleigh Sisson pinch hit for England and drew a one out walk which brought Analyse Petree to the dish.
Petree took a 1-1 pitch deep over the left field wall for a two-run home run, her second homer of the weekend and third of the season.
UAB added its final run in the seventh when Rogers hit into a fielder's choice that Erwin was able to score on from third and give the Green and Gold the lead 8-1.
In the second game of the day against SIUE (3-0), the game was scoreless until the Cougars' Reagan Curtis took UAB staring pitcher Emily Kachel deep over the left field wall for a solo home run.
UAB responded in the bottom half of the fourth as Petree got the offense started with a single up the middle. Rogers executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Petree to second and into scoring position. A Millsaps single up the middle scored Petree from second and tied the game up 1-1.
The Cougars broke the game open in the sixth with four runs on one hit and two errors. Claire Blount came in to pitch in relief of Kachel and walked the first two batters she saw and threw two wild pitches to put runners on the corners.
Kachel returned and hit the next batter to load the bases with nobody out. Kachel struck out the next hitter but gave up a single to left to drive in another run for SIUE. A sacrifice fly to left field scored the second run of the inning and an error on the relay throw to third base allowed the third run of the sixth to score.
The second error of the inning at shortstop allowed the fourth run to score and gave SIUE a 5-1 lead.
UAB was able to draw three straight walks to start the bottom half of the sixth and load the bases with nobody out. However, SIUE got back-to-back outs at home on a fielder's choice and a pop up to the pitcher to end the inning and keep the Blazers off the board.
Again in the seventh the Blazers loaded the bases but were only able to scratch across one run and fell to SIUE 5-2.
Blount took the loss and falls to 0-5 on the year.
