Last Meeting: Oct. 28, 2017: UAB 30, Southern Miss 12
STORYLINES:
- Despite Southern Miss leading the all-time series 10-6, UAB has owned the series of late, winning six of the last seven contests. Meeting for the 17th time, Southern Miss is UAB's most common opponent since the Blazers started playing football in 1991.
- A win would not only give UAB the C-USA West Division title, but it would also set a new program record for FBS wins and conference wins.
- The Blazers have been dominant in league play, winning by an average margin of 27 points. UAB has outscored its six C-USA opponents 198-38 overall.
- UAB leads the nation in scoring defense at 12.1 points per game. The Blazers are the only team with three shutouts this season and just one of two teams with multiple shutouts overall (Cincinnati being the other). UAB has held five-of-six C-USA opponents to seven points or less and has shut out league foes in 19 of 24 quarters.
- Along with leading the nation in scoring defense, the Blazers also rank second in third down (.227) and fourth down defense (.214), fourth in total defense (271.4), passing yards allowed (153.6) and sacks per game (3.44), fifth in red zone defense (.692) and eighth in tackles for loss per game (8.0).
- Offensively, UAB is coming off a school record performance in which they set the records for total offensive yards (668) and rushing yards (419) in a 52-3 victory over UTSA. The win was the third largest margin of victory in program history.
- The rushing attack is led by All-America candidate Spencer Brown who ranks fifth nationally with 13 rushing touchdowns. He needs one more to set the single season school record. Brown has scored at least one rushing touchdown in seven consecutive games, with four of those being multi-touchdown games.
- Brown has caught fire of late, having notched three straight 100-yard rushing performances, bringing his total to five on the year. He has 11 100-yard rushing games in his career, one shy of tying Joe Webb for the most in program history.
- Overall, UAB leads Conference USA and ranks ninth nationally with an average of 253.7 rushing yards per game.
- Southern Miss is coming off a 28-26 victory over Marshall to improve to 4-4 overall. The Golden Eagle started three freshmen in the backfield against the Thundering Herd in quarterback Tate Whatley, and running backs Steven Anderson and Trivenskey Mosley.
- Wide receiver Quez Watkins has scored a touchdown in six of eight games for Southern Miss. On the other side of the ball, USM ranks seventh nationally in total defense (282.5).
