BIRMINGHAM – Three goals in the first half propelled the UAB men's soccer team to a 4-0 win over Georgia State on Friday night at BBVA Compass Field.
The 4-0 victory tied UAB's largest win of the season, set on Oct. 6 against New Mexico. It also was the third shutout for the Blazers this season as all three have come at BBVA Compass Field.
"I never thought that you could have so much fun in the cold weather," head coach Mike Getman said. "I thought our guys played really well and really hard right from the opening whistle. This teams has had a great season in terms of hard they have worked and how well its played, but we just haven't always gotten every ball to go in. Tonight the finishing touch was there, everybody contributed, the shutout was nice for the defense because they have worked hard as well and I thought they deserved it tonight. All around it was a great way to send our seniors out."
Jake Futrell put the Blazers ahead early in the first half at the 12 minute mark as he fielded a pass from Gael Mabiala inside the box that grazed by the Panther keeper to give UAB a 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later, Blake White gave UAB its second goal as he rifled in a pass from the left side from Tarnue Tyler to make the game 2-0.
In the 23rd minute, Tyler and Philip Makinde combined to set White up for his second goal of the night that put UAB ahead 3-0.
The final goal of the game came off the foot of senior DeAndre Robinson in the 69th minute as he broke away to the top of the box and then sent a nice shot into the back of the net for the 4-0 win.
White became the third Blazer to register multiple goals in a game this season as he tallied his first career multi-goal contest. The freshman moved into sole possession of the team's leading scorer with five goals.
For Tyler, it was his first career multi assist game as he picked up his second and third assists of the season.
Futrell's goal was the first of his career, while Robinson picked up his fourth of the season and seventh of his UAB career.
In goal, James Teal and Seth Torman combined for the shutout. Teal made a season-high five saves, before he was relieved in the second half for Torman who came in and registered four saves.
UAB awaits to learn its opponent in the Conference USA Tournament set to begin on Wednesday, Nov. 7 in Charlotte, N.C. The pairings will be released on Saturday, following the conclusion of the New Mexico at Charlotte game. UAB entered tonight's match in seventh place in the C-USA standings.
