BIRMINGHAM – Making its first trip to the postseason since 2016, the No. 6 seed UAB men's soccer team opens play in the 2018 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Men's Soccer Championship when it faces host No. 3 seed Charlotte on Wednesday night. Kickoff between the Blazers and 49ers is set for 6 p.m. CST from Transamerica Field.
UAB wrapped up the regular with a 6-8-3 overall record and a 2-5-1 mark in league play. The Blazers ended the regular season on a high note with a 4-0 win over Georgia State on Friday night, tying the largest win of the season for the Green and Gold.
Blake White netted a pair of goals in the win over the Panthers on Friday. The freshman midfielder leads the team in goals and points, as he has netted five goals and has an assist under his belt during his first campaign with the Green and Gold.
Defensively, the Blazers are led by a multitude of players, including midfielder Eder Mora. The team captain has helped UAB pitch three shutouts this season, while he also netted the game-winning goal on a penalty kick earlier this year. On Monday, Mora was named to the C-USA All-Academic Team for the second consecutive season.
Charlotte enters the quarterfinals of the C-SUA Tournament as the No. 3 seed after going 12-3-1 overall and 6-2-0 in league play. The 49ers are a perfect 9-0 at Transamerica Field this season.
The 49ers are nationally ranked in multiple defensive categories, including fifth in save percentage (.889), shutout percentage (.750) and goals against average (.420). All 12 of the 49ers wins were shutouts, including one against the Blazers on Sept. 29.
UAB and Charlotte are meeting for the 34th time overall with the 49ers leading the series 9-20-5. The 49ers took the meeting earlier in the season, 1-0, at Transamerica Field.
The Blazers are no strangers to the C-USA Tournament as this year marks the 21st trip for the Green and Gold. UAB has taken home three C-USA titles, the last one coming in 2011.
