Heartbreaking Golden Goal Ends Blazers’ Season

CHARLOTTE – The sixth seed UAB men's soccer team gave three seeded Charlotte all it could handle, but it was the 49ers who netted the golden goal in the 93rd minute of the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Tournament on Wednesday night at Transamerica Field.
UAB concludes its 2018 season at 6-9-3 overall and finished 2-5-1 in league play. Charlotte, who entered the game as the No. 14 team in the country, had not been taken into extra time at all this season until tonight.
"Tonight was another heartbreaking loss in overtime," head coach Mike Getman said. "This team has worked so hard and given their heart and soul to UAB. I am proud of each and everyone of them."
The two teams battled to halftime scoreless as Tarnue Tyler got off both of UAB's goals in the first half.
In the 75th minute Charlotte got its best look of the as Daniel Bruce rifled in a shot that forced UAB keeper Seth Torman to make an acrobatic diving save to preserve the tie.
In the 84th minute, the 49ers got their final look in regulation but Torman made his sixth and final save to send the game into extra time.
Tommy Madden crossed to Preston Popp that he fired in a low shot that rifled past the diving Torman in the 93rd minute to end the game and the season for the Blazers.
Teal stepped up when UAB needed it most as the freshman was forced to make six saves, the second most he has had to make in his career.
UAB finished the night with just two shots, both off the foot of Tyler.
Tonight marked the ninth extra time game for the Blazers this season. UAB went 2-4-3 in overtime contests in 2018.
The future is bright for the UAB men's soccer program as it will return its leading scorer and both keepers for the 2019 season.
