BIRMINGHAM – With two matches remaining in the regular season and sitting pretty in fourth place in the Conference USA standings, the UAB women's soccer team looks for another big win on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it hosts the third-place Southern Miss Golden Eagles at BBVA Compass Field.
The Blazers (8-6-1, 5-3-0 C-USA) earned a crucial league win on Friday night, topping a red-hot WKU squad, 2-1, in overtime to move into its current fourth place position with 15 points, two points clear of the eight-team tournament cut line.
"Just as important as Friday was, Sunday holds just as much importance for us," head coach Erica Demers said. "We have spoken to our players about being in control to the best of our ability and earning another three points does that for us. We are excited for another challenge against a very good attacking team."
Junior Natalie Presedo and sophomore Kamilah Mustafa each notched a goal in the victory over WKU on Friday. For Presedo, it was the first goal of her Blazer career, while Mustafa increased her goal total to eight on the season and moved into a tie for third place with Amy Brewer for most game-winning goals in a single season with five.
Goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty made a move towards history as well, recording five saves to push her career total to 338, three shy of the school record of 341 held by Kate Blankenship.
Southern Miss (11-3-1, 5-2-1 C-USA) enters the contest riding a four-match unbeaten streak and is coming off a 1-0 win at Middle Tennessee that clinched its first 11-win season since the 1997 campaign.
The Golden Eagles' offense will turn to Miah Zuazua to lead the attack on Sunday, as the sophomore is tops on the team in shots (52), shots on goal (20), goals (9), assists (6) and points (24). Stephanie Garcia and Olivia Durham are the next closest goal scorers with four each.
UAB and Southern Miss will meet for the 20th time since the series began in 1998 when they take the field on Sunday, with the Blazers leading the all-time series, 12-5-2. Southern Miss is UAB's second-most face opponent behind Memphis, who the Blazers met for the 22nd time earlier this season.
The Blazers have been successful over the Golden Eagles in Birmingham, boasting a 6-3 record. The two teams met last season, with UAB emerging victorious, 1-0, at BBVA Compass Field.
