BIRMINGHAM – Senior Kelsey Daugherty's historic performance in goal capped off a perfect weekend for the UAB women's soccer team after the Blazers completed a 2-0 shutout victory over Southern Miss on Sunday afternoon.
With 12:13 remaining in the game, Daugherty faced a shot from Southern Miss' Monica Maldonaldo, which she comfortably handled for her school-record-breaking 342nd career save, surpassing the previous record of 341 saves held by Kate Blankenship (2007-10). The Kennesaw, Georgia, native finished the day with five total saves for a career total of 343 and completed her sixth shutout of the season and the 16th of her career.
"It was awesome to get the record today because I think we all played really well," Daugherty said. "It was especially cool because Kate (Blankenship) was here today. It was special to do it on alumni weekend."
UAB's (9-6-1, 6-3-0 C-USA) display was one of its best all-around performances of the season, with goals coming from Regan Kommor and Caroline Kehrer. Kommor matched her season-high three shots against the Golden Eagles and matched her career best with two of those shots on goal, while Kehrer was efficient with her lone shot of the game rippling the back of the net.
Jamiera Lunsford added two shots in the contest, while Paige Merry and Jessica Do each contributed one. Lunsford and Do also had one shot on goal apiece.
"I was really proud of our players for putting together a complete weekend," head coach Erica Demers said. "We haven't been able to put together back-to-back wins for quite some time now and the timing of it couldn't have been better. We had a lot of great moments this weekend and areas that we will be able to build from."
Southern Miss (11-4-1, 5-3-1 C-USA) was led by Miah Zuazua's four-shot performance, one of which found its way on target.
Kommor got UAB on the scoresheet first 8:51 into the match when her cross deflected off a Golden Eagle defender and back to her feet. The sophomore took matters into her own hands on her second effort and fired across goal into the far corner for her first score of the year to put the Blazers ahead, 1-0.
After a balanced first half, the Blazers wasted no time doubling their advantage when a floated ball was controlled by Kamilah Mustafa, who played a perfect cross across the goal mouth to the feet of Kehrer, who finished confidently to put UAB ahead 2-0 less than five minutes into the second half.
The Golden Eagles had a couple of chances, including one shot that came back off the left post in the second half, but never really troubled Daugherty or the Blazer defense as the Green and Gold held on for their second-straight victory.
UAB will close out the 2018 regular season on Saturday, October 27, when it welcomes Middle Tennessee to BBVA Compass Field for Senior Night. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. Fans can catch all the action via livestream on CUSA.tv, while live stats for Saturday's match will also be provided here.
