BIRMINGHAM – UAB appeared to be heading for its fourth overtime game of the season late on Saturday night, but a Middle Tennessee goal with less than five minutes in regulation spoiled the Blazers' home finale as they fell to the Blue Raiders, 1-0.
The Blazers (9-7-1, 6-4-0 C-USA) will head into next week's Conference USA Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will learn their opponent following the conclusion of Sunday's league action.
"I am disappointed in our performance tonight," head coach Erica Demers said. "We had some moments to change that game and unfortunately we did not play to the standard that we have created. We have a new week ahead and a new opportunity to get better. The conference tournament is an exciting time and I know we will bounce back."
Megan Hudgens, Caroline Kehrer and Jamiera Lunsford each notched two shots in the loss, with Hudgens' two shots going on frame, while Kamilah Mustafa and Betsy Ornelas each added a single shot of their own.
Defensively, Kelsey Daugherty came up with five massive saves to keep the Green and Gold in the game throughout the night. Four of the five saves came in the first half, including two point-blank denials.
Middle Tennessee's (10-6-1, 5-4-1 C-USA) goal came from Peyton DePriest, who led all players with six shots.
Lunsford nearly gave the Blazers the lead 10 minutes into the first half, splitting her defenders and receiving a perfectly weighted pass before sailing her shot inches over the crossbar. Middle Tennessee had its chances on the other end as well, but four saves in the half from Daugherty kept the match scoreless at the break.
The Blue Raiders stayed on the front foot offensively in the second half, outshooting the Blazers, 8-3, in the final 45 minutes. As UAB looked to send the match to overtime, Hannah Tillett slipped in DePriest, who finished low with pace to steal all three points, 1-0.
UAB now turns its attention the C-USA Tournament, which begins on Wednesday, October 31. More information on the tournament can be found here.
