UAB Tops WKU in Overtime Thriller, 2-1
10/19/2018 11:20:00 PM | Women's Soccer
BIRMINGHAM – Playing in overtime for just the third time all season and a massive three points on the line, sophomore Kamilah Mustafa once again answered the call for the UAB women's soccer team by netting her fifth game-winning goal of the season in the 95th minute to send the Blazers to a 2-1 victory over WKU on Friday night.
Mustafa's score moves her into a tie for third place in the UAB history books for game-winning goals with Amy Brewer, while the win moves the Blazers into fourth place in the league standings with 15 points on the campaign.
"Overtime games are a mental challenge and I thought our players came out ready for the opportunity to strike early," head coach Erica Demers said. "I am really proud of our effort tonight and getting a much needed three points."
Junior Natalie Presedo was a star for the Blazers' offense, scoring her first goal of the campaign in the first half as part of a two-shot performance. Sophomore Regan Kommor also tallied two shots, while four other Blazers, including Mustafa, added a single shot.
UAB's (8-6-1, 5-3-0 C-USA) defense got the job done, holding WKU to 11 shots in the match, well below their season average of 15 per contest. Goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty turned away five shots during the match, pulling her within three saves of Kate Blankenship's school record for total saves in a career.
The Lady Toppers (4-8-4, 2-5-2 C-USA) were led by Ambere Barnett, who finished the match with four shots, three of which were on a frame, and an assist.
It took just 12 minutes for UAB to get on the scoresheet when Presedo found herself alone 25 yards out away from goal. The sophomore smashed her shot well over the Lady Toppers' backline and clean into the corner to put the home side ahead, 1-0.
WKU answered with a goal of its own just under seven minutes later when Barnett's and Victoria Mayo's combination play found Sarah Gorham in the box, who finished off a cross to tie the match at one goal apiece.
Coming out of the half with the score knotted up at 1-1, the two teams each had their chances to take the lead, but a winner could not be crowned in regulation, sending the match into overtime.
Middway through the first overtime period, Jamiera Lunsford found Betsy Ornelas on a slicing run through the WKU defense and played a picture-perfect pass to the feet of Mustafa, who powered the ball past the keeper to clinch the 2-1 victory for UAB.
