UAB Falls at Old Dominion, 1-0

BIRMINGHAM – An Old Dominion goal less than five minutes into the second half was too much for the UAB women's soccer team to overcome as the Blazers dropped a tough match to the Monarchs, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon.
UAB (7-6-1, 4-3-0 C-USA) was unable to get the offense going in the match, mustering up three shots to Old Dominion's 16. Jamiera Lunsford claimed two of those shots, both of which were on goal, while Caroline Kehrer tallied the other.
Despite the lopsided shot total, the Blazer defense did a good job of keeping the Monarchs' attack at bay. Senior Kelsey Daugherty finished the game with six saves, five of which came in the first half.
Old Dominion (6-6-3, 3-3-1 C-USA) saw its goal come from Deirdre Bradley, while Natalie Johnson and Iris Achterhof each added three shots for the Monarchs.
The opening 45 minutes belonged to the Monarchs, who outshoot the Blazers, 10-1, and dominated possession. UAB absorbed the pressure well, though, and got to halftime with the game scoreless.
Three minutes into the second half, Daugherty was called upon and came up with a big save on Johnson, who fired in a sizzling header. However, the ball landed right at the feet of Bradley, who smashed it home to put Old Dominion ahead, 1-0.
UAB got off two shots in the remaining 40 minutes of game time and had an opportunity in the final seconds of the match to find an equalizer, but nothing came out of those chances as the home team claimed the 1-0 victory.
UAB returns to BBVA Compass Field on Friday, October 18, when the Blazers welcome WKU for a 7 p.m. kick. Tickets for Friday's contest are $5 for adults and $3 for youth and can be purchased at the gate, online at uabsports.com, or by calling the UAB Ticket Office at (205) 975-UAB1.
