Closing Minute Goal Lifts UAB Over App State

BIRMINGHAM – A goal in the 87th-minute broke a 0-0 tie and lifted the UAB men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Appalachian State on Wednesday night at BBVA Compass Field.
UAB (4-6-2) is now 3-1-2 in its last six games and is 2-0-2 at home during the stretch.
"This team has played well and worked hard every single game this year," head coach Mike Getman said. "Tonight it came down to one good moment, one great moment, against a really good team and that is what soccer is. It is 90 minutes of hard work and then one or two, either good or bad, moments that decide a match."
Adam Brooker broke the tie when he headed in a cross from Jake Futrell for the game's only goal.
"App State was an excellent team, moved the ball well, worked incredibly hard and I thought we matched every piece of it with them," Getman said. "When you look at the stats they are almost identical up and down. The difference was one great cross from Jake and a fantastic header from Adam and that was the difference between two really good teams."
The goal marked the second of the sophomore's career and his first of the season. The assist was Futrell's first and his first career points.
The UAB backline pitched its second consecutive shutout, while allowing just eight shots all night. Through the last two games the Blazers' defense has allowed 18 shots, while only giving up 10 on frame.
UAB returns to Conference USA play on Saturday when it makes a return trip to the Sunshine State to take on Florida Atlantic. Kickoff between the Blazers and Owls is slated for 6 p.m. CST.
Fans can receive admission into every home men's soccer, women's soccer, volleyball, women's basketball, baseball and softball game for the entire 2018-19 season by purchasing a Gold Card for $65. Contact the UAB Ticket Office, (205) 975-UAB1, for more details.
