BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB cheerleading team claimed third place in the Division I small coed category at the 2018 College Cheer and Dance National Championships at the ESPN Wild World of Sports Complex which was held Jan. 12-14.
In the Blazers' division which consisted of 16 schools, UAB was in fourth after the semifinals and hit their best performance in the finals to move up one spot and claim third place.
"Overall I was very happy with how we competed," head cheer and dance coach Cody Sellers said. "We did not have our best showing in the semifinals but we got a second chance in finals and hit our best performance of the year. I was proud of our placement and it was great to see the kids get a medal around their neck."
The Blazers finished sixth-tenths of a point behind Ball State for second place, while Purdue won the overall competition.
Competing in the overall Division I grouping, the UAB Golden Girls dance team made the semifinals for both the jazz and hip hop categories but did not advance to finals.
The cheer and dance teams now turn their attention to the remainder of the men's and women's basketball seasons along with the Conference USA and postseason tournaments.
Cheer and dance will both be holding upcoming clinics and tryouts. More details on dates and times will be released in the near future.
