Blazers Blank Kennesaw State in Home Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women's tennis team turned in a 7-0 shutout of Kennesaw State Sunday after from George Ward Park in the its home opener.
UAB (1-1) gained an early advantage when Marlene Herrmann and Sonia Grzywocz defeated Alexandra Mercado and Jessica Cantrell 6-2 at the No. 1 doubles position. Megan Bertrands and Jana Hecking clinched the point for the Blazers with their 6-2 victory over Cristina-Perez Marti and Aspen Jarrett at No. 3.
Hecking put the Blazers in front 2-0 following her 6-0, 6-0 win over Jarrett at the No. 5 singles position. Newcomer Alex Shchipakina downed Marti 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 to give the Blazers a 3-0 advantage, and Herrmann sealed the victory at No. 2 after she bested Mercado 6-2, 6-0.
The Blazers also picked up singles wins from Grzywocz (6-1, 6-2), Sisirak (6-2, 6-4) and Bertrands (6-3, 7-5) to complete the sweep.
UAB returns to the court Saturday at 12 p.m. when the Blazers host Belmont from George Ward Park.
