Daugherty Named C-USA Goalkeeper of the Week

IRVING, Texas – On the heels of another undefeated weekend for the UAB women's soccer team, junior Kelsey Daugherty was selected as the Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Daugherty also won the award earlier this year after posting shutouts of Georgia State and Jackson State on the opening weekend of the regular season. The Kennesaw, Ga., native is now the only player in school history to be named Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week twice in the same season.
"We're all so happy for Kelsey to receive such a high honor again this week," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "She has been a confident, consistent leader in the back line, and she has played a major role in our entire back line doing an exceptional job of eliminating shots and goals."
Daugherty opened the week by tying her season-high with seven saves Friday in a 3-2 double overtime win at Furman. She also made two game-saving stops in the first overtime, forcing the game into a second extra session where teammate Rachel Green would score the golden goal and give UAB its third road win of the season.
On Sunday at UNC Asheville, Daugherty made six saves and moved into fifth place all-time at UAB with 195. Her performance against the Bulldogs helped UAB to a 1-1 draw and kept the Blazers atop Conference USA in second place in the league standings.
"It is an honor to win this award but it always goes back to the girls in front of me," Daugherty said. "We had a lot of great defensive moments this weekend, and we showed a lot of fight with two overtime results. We proved this weekend that we can find a way to win, but we are still focused on getting better and ready for conference play."
UAB has now had at least one Conference USA Player of the Week in each of the first three weeks of the season. Last Monday, Green was tabbed Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week after a goal and an assist in road games against UT Martin and No. 24 Memphis.
Daugherty, Green and the rest of the Blazers return to BBVA Compass Field for the first time since Aug. 18 Friday at 7 p.m. against Tennessee Tech.
