BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Megan Hudgens scored her fifth goal of the season and the UAB women's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to four after playing to a 1-1 draw with Belmont Sunday afternoon from BBVA Compass Field.
UAB (5-1-2) has not lost a game since falling 2-1 in double overtime Aug. 27 at Memphis, leaving the Blazers in a tie with Louisiana Tech for first place in Conference USA.
Following a quiet first half that saw a combined two shots on goal, UAB struck first with a goal just over six minutes into the second half. Midfielder Amy Brewer dribbled down the middle of the field and delivered a pass left that allowed Hudgens to blast a shot far post for the goal.
"Our game plan was to try and get the ball outside as much as we could today," Hudgens said. "Amy did a great job of sticking with the game plan and playing a ball outside that gave me an opportunity to get a free shot on goal."
Hudgens leads UAB in goals (5), points (10) and shots (17) and has already surpassed her goal production (4) from last season. The Alpharetta, Ga., native has also scored a goal in three of her last four games.
"I think Megan is gaining a lot more confidence in herself, and that has allowed her to get open chances where she is striking the ball well," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "You can't score if you don't shoot, so I think the newly instilled confidence is playing a big part of it now."
Belmont (4-2-1) answered two minutes later when Belicia Mendiola netted her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Mendiola gained possession inside the UAB box, cut back to her left and fired a shot across the goal and found its way over the leaping hands of Blazer keeper Kelsey Daugherty.
Rachel Green gave UAB its best opportunity to score in the first overtime, as she dribbled through traffic and into the Belmont box, but her right-footed shot sailed just right and over the end line.
Jessica Do and Caroline Kehrer nearly netted the golden goal midway through the second overtime when Do sent a cross into the Bruin box. Kehrer leaped and put a header on net only to have Belmont keeper Lily Herman come up with the save.
"I thought the way we played in the second overtime was the best we had played all game long," Demers added. We talked on the sideline about how we were the more fit team, but we missed some chances and didn't finish our opportunities."
UAB returns to the pitch Friday at 7 p.m. when the Blazers host Mississippi Valley State at 7 p.m.
