BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women's soccer team puts the finishing touches on its three-game homestand Friday at 7 p.m. when the Blazers welcome Mississippi Valley State to BBVA Compass Field on UAB Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night.
All UAB faculty and staff will receive $3 admission with their One Card and will be recognized for their efforts at halftime. In addition, all youth wearing a youth soccer jersey will receive $1 admission.
UAB (5-1-2) enters the weekend riding a four-match unbeaten streak following a 2-0 victory last Friday over Tennessee Tech and a 1-1 draw with Belmont on Sunday. The Blazers have not lost since falling 2-1 in double overtime on Aug. 27 at Memphis.
Junior Kelsey Daugherty was named the Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week for the second consecutive week and is now only the second player to win the award three times in the same season. Freshman Audria Wood also picked up a league honor, as she was tabbed the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week. The Blazers have had at least one C-USA weekly winner in all four weeks this season.
Forward Megan Hudgens continues to lead the Blazer offensive attack and begins play first in the conference and 24th in the NCAA with five goals. The Alpharetta, Ga., native has goals in three of her last four games and has helped UAB rank 24th in the NCAA with 17 goals.
Caroline Kehrer and Rachel Green are both second on the team with eight points on three goals and two assists.
Daugherty has been a mainstay in net for the Blazers, making 40 saves, posting a 0.80 goals against average and recording a league-best three shutouts.
Mississippi Valley State (1-5-0) enters play Friday having lost four straight games and has been outscored 23-1 during that stretch. The Devilettes have not won since posting 1-0 victory at Nicholls State on Aug. 20 in the second game of the season.
Freshman forward Sheyenne Bonnick and junior forward Rhonique Alexander lead the Mississippi Valley State offense with two points on one goal each. Senior Laadi Issaka is the only Devilette with an assist.
"We're excited to be at home against for our final non-conference game before we embarck on a three-game road trip to begin league play," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "Mississippi Valley State will be a very athletic, counter-attacking style team. Our team will have to be aware and prepared to defend with 11 played behind the ball at all times. We look forward to this last challenge before conference play starts."
UAB and Mississippi Valley State will meet on the pitch for the first time in school history when the two schools hookup on Friday in Birmingham.
UAB will be facing a school from the SWAC for just the third time in school history. The Blazers have only played Jackson State in its history and defeated the Tigers 9-0 in 2002 and 5-0 earlier this season in Jackson.
