BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to five with a 3-0 shutout of Mississippi Valley State Friday evening from BBVA Compass Field.
UAB goalie Kelsey Daugherty, who earned her third Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week award on Monday, posted her fourth shutout of the season and moved into a tie for fifth place on UAB's all-time list.
Daugherty has made 45 saves this season, owns a 0.72 goals against average and leads Conference USA in shutouts. The Kennesaw, Ga., native is only the second player in league history to win C-USA Goalkeeper of the Week accolades three times in the same season.
"I thought we found small moments of what we focused on during training this week, but there were definitely times where we wanted to expand those moments," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "We felt like this was a game where we could have worked on ourselves a lot more than we actually did, but I thought that we did get better tonight, just not as much as I would have liked."
UAB (6-1-2) wasted little time in grabbing the lead as senior midfielder Amy Brewer notched her second goal of the season in the seventh minute. Megan Hudgens delivered a left-footed cross that allowed Brewer to gain possession inside the Mississippi Valley box and beat keeper Rita Gyasi with a shot into the right corner of the goal.
Rachel Green added her fourth goal of the season early in the second half to push the UAB lead to 2-0. Green knifed her way through the Mississippi Valley State defense and fired a right-footed shot across the box and past a diving Gyasi in the 54th minute.
"We definitely picked it up in the second half but we were disappointed in how we started the game," Green said. "It's been a trend of ours, unfortunately, to start slow before we really work ourselves into the game. Despite that, this was a good win for us as we prepare for conference play."
Senior Morgan Key-Adams capped the scoring for UAB in the 81st minute with her first goal of the season. Key-Adams used a cross from the right sideline by Kassandra Daniel to blast a shot into the upper corner of the net.
The Blazers finished non-conference play outscoring opponents 20-7 and have already registered two more goals than they did all of last season.
"We've talked a lot lately about trying to be more consistent with the things we can control as we head into league play," Demers added. "Effort is an intangible that we have to bring every night, but it's just one of the small details that we have to improve at if we want to become a better team this year."
UAB returns to the pitch Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. when the Blazers travel to El Paso, Texas, to face UTEP to begin Conference USA play.
