EL PASO, Texas – Rachel Green scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season and UAB ran its unbeaten streak to six with a 1-0 victory over UTEP Friday evening at University Field in its Conference USA opener.
UAB (7-1-2, 1-0-0) has now beaten UTEP three straight times and won for the first time in school history at University Field.
"This was a great result for our team and I thought we showed a lot of character in certain moments of the game," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "UTEP put us under pressure in the second half and it was vital for us to be able to withstand it. Our backline did a great job of keeping the game scoreless until Rachel stepped up and absolutely buried a finish."
The Blazers broke the scoreless draw midway through the second half when Green and Amy Brewer connected on a corner kick for the goal. Brewer sent a cross into the UTEP box and Green fired a shot past Miner keeper Alyssa Palacios and into the corner of the net.
Brewer now leads UAB with four assists and has either an assist or goal in each of the last three games.
"This win was a great way to start league play," Green said. "We came out and fought for a full 90 minutes and Kelsey had so many incredible saves to keep us in the game. I was lucky enough to get a perfect setup for a late goal. It was a great team win."
UAB keeper Kelsey Daugherty finished with a season-high nine saves and registered her league-leading fifth shutout of the season. The Kennesaw, Ga., native is now tied for fourth all-time at UAB with eight career shutouts.
"We did a really good job executing the defensive game plan," Daugherty said. "Everyone worked together and did their job."
UAB returns to action Friday, September 29 at 6 p.m. when the Blazers travel to Miami, Fla., to face FIU.
