Blazers Kick Off Season In Boston

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team kicks off the season this weekend in Boston, Mass., at the Boston College Tournament.
The Blazers will open the tournament Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. CT against the Providence Friars. UAB will then play two matches on Saturday with match one starting at 9:30 a.m. CT versus Fairfield and at 6:30 p.m. CT the Blazers will play host Boston College.
UAB has only met one of the three teams in the tournament before, that team being Providence. The Friars lead the all-time series 1-0.
The green and gold are looking for a bounce back season after finishing the 2016 season with an 11-19 (3-11 C-USA) record. UAB returns 12 players this season including Erika Zembyla who led the Blazers in kills last year with 345.
Gabby Deshotel will also return to the court in 2017 after missing last year due to injury. The Alabama native led the Blazers in kills in 2015 with 504.
"We're excited to get the season started and we are looking forward to a great tournament at Boston College," head coach Kerry Messersmith said. "We've added some great girls and have a lot of talent coming back, we are hopeful for an exciting season."
UAB's first opponent, Providence, went 13-21 (1-17 Big East) last season and are coach by Margot Royer-Johnson. Fairfield went 28-6 (18-0 MAAC) in 2016 and return it's leading outside hitters. The Stags are under the direction of Todd Kress. Tournament host Boston College went 8-22 (3-17) last year and its head coach is Chris Campbell.
The Blazers return home Aug. 31 to host the Blazer Invitational which will run through Sept. 3. UAB will host Georgia State, Charleston Southern, Austin Peay and Western Illinois that weekend.
