Blazers Fall In First Match Of 2017

BOSTON, Ma. – UAB volleyball falls to Providence in its first match of the season three sets to two in the Boston College Tournament.
UAB jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the first set, but Providence battled back to tie the set at five all and then took the lead 14-11. The Blazers responded by rattling off five straight points taking a 16-15 lead. The match went back-and-forth with both teams swapping the lead before UAB took command of the set.
Erika Zembyla got the final kill of Set 1 for UAB as the Blazers took the set 25-13.
Providence bounced back in Set 2 and after trading the lead early; the Friars took command of the set and only gave up the lead once. They quickly regained the lead and took the second set 25-22.
The third set was another back-and-forth battle as the green and gold jumped out to an early 5-2 lead. The Friars got back into the set after stinging two, three point runs together and eventually took a 13-11 lead.
UAB answered back with a three-point run of its own and both teams continued to battle and swap the lead. After a 20-20 tie, the Blazers pushed out to a three point lead before finally putting Providence away 25-22.
In the fourth set, the Friars again bounced back and controlled the action as they got out early to a 5-2 lead. UAB tied the set late on two occasions but both times the Friars answered back and eventually took the set 25-23.
The Friars finally broke the back-and-forth battle and took command of the final set early, and knocked off the Blazers 15-9 in the fifth and final set.
"It was a great battle for all five sets and our girls gave great effort through out," head coach Kerry Messersmith said. "Unfortunately, we came out on the wrong end of it today but we'll get two more chances tomorrow to get win number one of 2017."
Four Blazers recorded 10 plus kills, Zembyla and Haley Jared led the way with 16 kills while Gabby Deshotel and Victoria Young chipped in with 15 and 13 respectively. Kenley Adams racked up 57 assists while Emily Martinez tallied 16 digs to go with Jared's 14, Kaylee Gilchrist and Adams had 13 digs each.
The Blazers will play two games tomorrow against Fairfield at 9:30 a.m. CT and versus host Boston College at 6:30 p.m. CT.
