BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - One of the nation's most recognizable cheerleading coaches, UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram has announced the hiring of Cody Sellers as the Blazers' new Spirit Coordinator.
Sellers' resume includes winning seven national championships - two as an athlete at the University of West Georgia and an additional five at his Alma Mater as an assistant coach. Sellers also represented Team USA in 2010 and won a Gold Medal at the International Cheer Union World Championship.
"We are excited to have Cody join our UAB program as he is someone who is nationally known in the cheerleading community," said Ingram. "Cody will build upon the solid foundation that has been established in this spirit program the past few years and he comes highly regarded as one of the up-and-coming coaches in this profession."
Most recently, Sellers was the assistant coach at the University of Minnesota where he helped lead the Gophers to a fifth-place finish in the all-girl division and a 13th place finish in the co-ed division at the 2017 UCA College National Championship.
Prior to Minnesota, Sellers spent five years (2011-16) at West Georgia as an assistant coach and was a part of five national titles, three in co-ed and two in the all-girl division.
"I've learned a great deal about what it takes to be successful coming from a program like West Georgia that has 21 national titles overall," Sellers said. "There is a unique process involved and it requires individual accountability and a team first mentality. Our program's primary focus will remain to support UAB athletics, our university and the Birmingham community, and what a better time to start than this fall with the return of Blazer football."
Along with coaching collegiately for the past six years, Sellers has been a head instructor for the Universal Cheerleaders Association since 2007 where he has trained over 300 high school coaches and 150 college coaches across the country on stunt techniques, safety progressions, crowd involvement, game day interaction, emergency planning and efficient scheduling.
In that role, Sellers has directed 75 camps nationwide that range in attendance from 35-900 participants. He has also coached international camps in four different countries.
A native of Graysville, Ala., Sellers graduated from West Georgia with a degree in Sport Management and earned a minor in Mass Communications. Sellers holds certifications with AACCA, USAG, NFHS and AAU.
