BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team celebrated Senior Day in style with a 4-1 victory over Jackson State Saturday afternoon from George Ward Park. Blazer head coach Mark Tjia honored seniors Pardis Kianoush and Catherine Ragon before the match.
UAB dropped the first doubles match of the day with a 6-0 setback at No. 3, but the Blazers rallied to win the final two matches to claim the point and build a 1-0 advantage. Freshmen Marlene Herrmann and Hana Sisirak turned in a 6-2 victory over Oni Jones and Ariel Dickson at No. 2, and Kianoush and Reghan Lynch followed with a 6-4 win against Lucia Solis and Tyler Smith at No. 1.
Dickson pulled Jackson State even when she posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Taylor Factor at No. 5. Kianoush, however, gave UAB the lead right back after she defeated Smith 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1.
Lynch secured her second win of the afternoon and tallied the third point for UAB with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Nina Zhang at No. 4. Sisirak sealed the win following her 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Jones at No. 3.
"This was a special and emotional day because it was the final home match for Pardis and Catherine," Tjia said. "I am just so glad that we could send them off with a win. They certainly deserve to have their last match here as a good memory."
UAB begins its final road trip of the season Friday at 2 p.m. when the Blazers travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn., to face Middle Tennessee.
