BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 defeat to Louisiana Tech Saturday afternoon from George Ward Park in the Blazers' home opening match.
UAB built a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point after taking the first two matches, as freshman Hana Hisirak and sophomore Natalies Voss turned in a 6-2 victory over Nadja Manjon and Jill van den Dungen at the No. 6 position to give the Blazers an early edge. Senior Pardis Kianoush and freshman Marlene Herrmann secured the point at No. 1 by downing Jazmin Britos and Marta Sramkova 6-3.
Sonia Chen pulled Louisiana Tech even when she bested Herrmann 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 2 singles position. Alba Escalona Perny gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the day after she defeated Natalie Voss 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5.
Manjon captured the third straight point and put Louisiana Tech ahead 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Sisirak at No. 4.
Sophie Dodds secured her first singles win of the season and cut the deficit to one point following her 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 win over Haley Ballinger at No. 6.
Sramkova clinched the match for Louisiana Tech with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 3 over Reghan Lynch.
"We were finally able to put three competitive doubles teams out there for the first time," UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. "We competed very well at some positions today in singles, but we can do better in some of the other lines. We have to learn from this and get better for our city rival Samford on Thursday."
UAB makes the short trip across town Thursday at 1:30 p.m. to face Samford from Courington Tennis Pavilion.
