Blazer Basketball Celebrates UAB Bookstore Hoops After Dark

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB basketball programs kicked off the 2017-18 season in style on Thursday with UAB Bookstore Hoops on the Green in front of an estimated crowd of 3,200.
The preseason event featured player introductions, highlight videos, a three-point contest, team scrimmages and a dunk contest.
Women's basketball freshman Lea Kerstein won the three-point contest after sinking 12 treys to beat the eight of men's sophomore Nate Darling. Kerstein defeated teammates Deanna Kuzmanic and Rachel Childress to reach the finals, while Darling bested Thomas Smallwood and William Lee in the opening round. It's the second straight season in which the women have defeated the men, as Childress captured the crown last season.
Zack Bryant stole the show in the dunk contest with a perfect score in the finals. Bryant downed teammates Jalen Perry, Makhtar Gueye and Deion Lavender.
Team Gold won the women's scrimmage with a 23-20 victory over Team Green, while the men's Team Gold bested Team Green by a 48-40 final score.
The men's team kicks off the 2017-18 regular season Friday, Nov. 10 in a matchup with Jacksonville at Bartow Arena. The women's team opens its season Saturday, Nov. 11 with a home game against Mississippi Valley State.
