BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women's soccer team begins a four-game homestand Friday at 7 p.m. when the Blazers host Southern Miss at BBVA Compass Field on Cancer Awareness Night.
The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a free UAB Women's Soccer Cancer Awareness t-shirt and all fans are encouraged to arrive early for a pregame balloon dedication. In addition, children wearing a youth soccer jersey receive $1 admission.
Sunday's match against Louisiana Tech is slated to begin at 1 p.m. and will feature postgame autographs from players and coaches.
UAB (10-2-3, 4-1-1) enters the weekend following a 3-1 victory over UTSA that pushed the Blazers into fourth place in the Conference USA standings with 13 points. Rice currently sits atop the conference with 21 points and a perfect 7-0-0 record.
The Blazers received goals from Rachel Green, Caroline Kehrer and Megan Hudgens Sunday against the Roadrunners en route to their sixth road win of the season. It's the seventh time this season UAB has scored at least three goals in a game.
Senior Amy Brewer paces the UAB offense with 22 points on nine goals and four assists, ranking fourth in Conference USA in points and third in goals. The Peachtree City, Ga., native is also tops in the league with four game-winning goals.
Hudgens is second on the team with 19 points on seven goals and a team-leading five assists, while Green ranks third with 17 points on seven goals and three assists.
Keeper Kelsey Daugherty is third in the league with a 0.81 goals against average and second with five shutouts. The Kennesaw, Ga., native has already been tabbed the Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week three times this season.
Southern Miss (6-6-3, 0-4-3) is winless in its last seven games after playing to 1-1 draws last weekend against both Old Dominion and Charlotte. The Golden Eagles have not won since earning a 10-0 victory over Jackson State on Sept. 14.
Senior Becky McMullen and junior Ola Akinniyi are tied for the team lead with 13 points, while keeper Kelly Brahmbatt owns a 1.16 goals against average and has made 60 saves.
"We are looking forward to being at home as we are coming close to the end of regular season play," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "We have been very cautious of the loads we are placing on our players heading into this very important weekend. Southern Miss has a dynamic front line and our backs will be pressed to play smart, connecting balls out to help us build our attack."
Louisiana Tech (10-2-5, 3-1-3) is on a five-match unbeaten streak following a win over Charlotte and a draw with Old Dominion last weekend. The Bulldogs currently sit in sixth place in Conference USA and trail UAB by one point.
Junior Mylene Roy-Ouellet tops Louisiana Tech with 19 points on eight goals and three assists and sophomore Jenna Dages stands second with 18 points on eight goals and two assists. Courtney Tompkins has played 11 games in goal and owns a 0.83 goals against average while making 53 saves.
"Louisiana Tech is coming to us off a very strong weekend after beating Charlotte and playing to a tie against Old Dominion," Demers added. "They are playing extremely well right now and our team will need to be focused and prepared for a 90-minute battle."
Louisiana Tech plays Thursday at Middle Tennessee before Sunday's match in Birmingham.
