BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Caroline Kehrer scored her sixth goal of the season and UAB registered its sixth shutout of the year with a 1-0 victory over Southern Miss Friday evening at BBVA Compass Field.
UAB (11-2-3, 5-1-1) picked up three points in the league standings and now sit in third place with 16 points, three points behind second-place North Texas and one point ahead of fourth-place Louisiana Tech.
"I thought the first 15 or 20 minutes of the match was some of the best soccer we've played all year," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "The disappointing part, however, was that we didn't sustain it and play like the aggressor anymore. Something like that could hurt us as we move through the rest of the season."
Kehrer put UAB on the board early with a goal in the second minute off a feed from senior Amy Brewer. Brewer dribbled down the left side of the field and played the ball to her right towards a streaking Kehrer. Kehrer trapped the ball and turned and fired a shot that ricocheted off the bottom of the crossbar and into the Southern Miss goal.
"I think it's always important to come out and score as fast as possible," Kehrer said. "Tonight we needed to do a better job of continuing to put pressure on their defense and score more goals. It's definitely something that we'll need to do on Sunday."
Brewer now leads in with five assists and 23 points and owns the 11th-most points in a single season in school history. Tara Kidwell holds the UAB record with the 35 points she recorded in 2004.
UAB keeper Kelsey Daugherty finished with five saves and ranks third in Conference USA with an 0.76 goals against average. The Kennesaw, Ga., also owns the fourth-most shutouts in school history in a single season with six.
"I think our back line continues to be very strong with Kelsey back there as our anchor," Demers added. "Melissa and Audria have both done a really nice job to keep the game in front of them, and they've done a great job communicating when they need to drop and when they need to step."
UAB continues a four-game homestand Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Blazers face Louisiana Tech.
