BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A game-winning goal from Massimo Ferrin gave the UAB men's soccer team all it would need to defeat Georgia Southern 2-1 on Tuesday night at BBVA Compass Field. The Blazers improve to 4-5-3 overall and remain unbeaten in non-conference home games, while the Eagles fall to 6-6-0.
"I thought it was a great team performance," head coach Mike Getman said. "The guys gave everything they had after being so drained from playing a tough 90-minute game at New Mexico on Saturday at a high altitude but they came out and everybody contributed. I could not be more proud of them."
UAB found itself in an early 1-0 hole after Georgia Southern's Nick Wells crossed to Victor Gustafsson on a break away in the 22nd minute giving the match its first goal.
But, six minutes later Ryan Sullivan drilled his second career goal from the top of the box to even the score at 1-1.
UAB took the go-ahead lead in the 74th minute 2-1 lead when Ferrin headed a ball into the back of the net following an Aidan O'Hara shot that ricocheted off the crossbar. For Ferrin it was his, team best, fifth goal of the season and O'Hara's first career assist.
"We've played well all year long but we haven't always gotten the results we deserved," Getman said. "We have talked over the last few days about just winning the next 10 minutes and I thought we won the first 10, then we won the second 10 and then we won every 10-minute period after that. "
The Blazers' freshmen keeper James Teal once again had a career night in goal tying his career high in saves (6) for the third time this season. Teal, who ranks eighth in saves among freshmen in keepers in the NCAA, has made an astounding 18 saves over the Blazers' previous three games.
UAB is entering a crucial point in its schedule as three of its final four games are against Conference USA opponents. The Blazers play the first of those games on Saturday when they welcome Florida Atlantic to BBVA Compass Field. Kick off is set for 7 P.M on Oct. 21.
"It's about building a little bit of confidence right now," Getman said. "We've played well and shown the guys the video and they see that they are doing well but sometimes you just need to win a game. That's two in a row at home. There's no question that this was a good victory against a really good team and it will go a long way towards building that confidence."
