Women's Tennis Downs Lipscomb in Season Opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The UAB women’s tennis team opened its spring season in style with a 4-3 victory over Lipscomb Friday evening at the Whitworth Indoor Center.
The Blazers took the early advantage when Sophie Dodds and McKenna Root turned in a 6-4 victory over Hannah Gamage and Jaclyn Findlay at the No. 3 doubles position. However, Lipscomb claimed wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions thereafter to secure to doubles point and build a 1-0 lead.
Reghan Lynch pulled UAB even when she posted a 6-4, 6-1 singles win over Gamage at the No. 3 position. Freshman Hana Sisirak put the Blazers ahead 2-1 after she downed Denise Buberl 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4.
Consecutive victories from Madeleine Brooks at No. 2 and Thabile Tshatedi at No. 5 put Lipscomb back ahead and gave the Bisons a 3-2 lead.
Blazer senior Pardis Kianoush responded with a 6-7, 6-2, 4-3 (retired) victory over No. 53 Viktoriya Dzyuba at No. 1 to keep UAB alive and tie the score 3-3. Newcomer Natalie Voss clinched the win for UAB when she bested Findlay 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 6 position.
“I just witnessed the most amazing sports moment of my career as a player or coach,” UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. “Natalie was down 6-1, 5-1 in the final match and then down 4-1 in the third set and she pulled it out to give us the team win.”
UAB returns to action Sunday at 10 a.m. when the Blazers travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to face Alabama from the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility.
