BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men’s soccer team topped Auburn Montgomery 4-0 in its first home contest of the 2016 season. The exhibition was played at BBVA Compass Field, just the second game ever for the men’s team at the facility, and was played as three, 30-minute periods.
The freshmen class was well represented in the contest as Massimo Ferrin, Chase Rushing, and Tarnue Tyler each scored. Ferrin, who also scored against No. 3 Clemson last Saturday, added an assist on Tyler’s goal.
“We played pretty well and certainly scored some nice goals,” said UAB head coach Mike Getman. “We have a lot of young players on this team, but they are soccer players and they can play. I’m not surprised at all that those guys are scoring goals as that is what we brought them here to do. It’s nice to see it happening early and often. They have the ability and their showing it.”
The Blazers first goal came off a well-placed cross from Ferrin in the 24th minute. The ball ended up at the feet of Tyler near the penalty spot and he placed it into the right side of the net to take a 1-0 lead.
Ferrin followed shortly with a goal of his own that was assisted by senior Rami Dajani. The Blazers led 2-0 in the 28th minute.
UAB was gifted its third goal when Warhawks goalie Stephen Ingram misplayed a ball with Rushing pressing him. The freshmen from River Ridge, La., kept his composure and guided the ball into the net for the 3-0 advantage in the 33rd minute.
The Blazers’ final goal came late in the second period following beautiful build-up play. Philip Makinde got the ball over to Eder Mora at the top of the box and proceeded to lay it off for Sullivan. The junior midfielder ripped the in the upright goalie and pass the outstretched arms of AUM goalie Jacob Bergengren.
UAB peppered the net with 17 shots, 10 of which were on goal. The defense additionally played well, giving up only seven shots with two shots on target.
“Our defending was quite good,” said Getman. “Our goalkeepers did quite well and I am very pleased with the shutout. I thought it was a team effort that got the job done.”
The Blazers have one more exhibition game scheduled against Louisville on Saturday, August 20. That game is slated for a 5:00 p.m. start following the Blazers annual Youth Clinic which begins at 2:30 p.m. and is free to attend for boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 18.
