BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Mother Nature altered the UAB men’s soccer team’s plan for its final exhibition on Saturday evening. Lightning and heavy rain appeared after 39 minutes of play and forced the game between the Blazers and Louisville to be called off with the score tied at 1-1.
The Cardinals controlled the pace of play early on and found the back of the net off a well-executed corner play. Danny Reynolds played it short to Tim Kubel who crossed it from left to right where Jack Gayton steered the ball in with a header to give the Cards a 1-0 lead.
The Blazers picked up their play shortly after that and began to pressure Louisville. Senior Rami Dajani delivered a pass across the ground to the middle of the box where senior Henrique Sposito was awaiting and finished with his left foot to draw the score even at 1-1.
The two teams played evenly for the remainder of the first half that was played. With 5:45 showing on the clock, the game was put into a lightning delay and eventually called off due to the lighting and heavy rain in the area.
UAB hosted its annual youth clinic before the game that went off without a hitch. Nearly 800 parents and children were in attendance.
The Blazers begin the regular season next Friday night at home against Memphis. That game is slated to kick-off at 7 p.m.
