UAB Sweeps Tuesday Matches

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team earned a pair of victories Tuesday at George Ward Tennis Center with wins over North Alabama and Jackson State. In the first match, the Blazers blanked the North Alabama Lions, 7-0, as they swept the singles matches. Following the sweep, UAB earned a gritty 4-1 win over the Jackson State Tigers.
"We are looking good in some areas and not so good in others," head coach Mark Tjia said. "We are going to try to build on this momentum going into a very challenging schedule next week as we head to Arizona for three matches."
On the day, Pardis Kianoush, Elaine Simon and Reghan Lynch earned a pair of victories apiece, while Catherine Ragon, Sophie Dodds and Amy Lowther each won singles wins.
In doubles action, the duo of Kianoush and Simon garnered two wins on court two, while Ragon and Lowther picked up a pair of wins on court three.
The Blazers blanked North Alabama as they earned the complete sweep in singles action. On court five, Lynch earned a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win over Nele Seitz. Dodds and Simon followed suit with 6-1, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-3 wins on courts four and three, respectively, to give UAB a 4-0 lead to clinch the overall victory.
On court six, Lowther earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Claire DeGeorge, while Simon extended the Blazers' lead to 6-0 with a 6-3, 6-3 decision.
On court one, Kianoush battled the top-seeded Olivera Ngouabeu as she earned a three-set 6-1, 1-6, 10-4 tiebreak victory to complete the sweep.

To kick off doubles play, Kianoush and Simon breezed to an easy 6-0 win on court two, giving UAB a 1-0 advantage. On courts two and three, the Blazers battled back and forth en route to earning a 1-0 lead in the competition with a victory on court three. On court one, despite quick hands by Dodds and Lynch, they fell to the top duo, 6-4.
In singles action, Lynch added to the UAB lead with a 6-0, 6-2 win on court five. The Tigers cut the Blazers' lead to one, 2-1, with a win on court six over Lowther.
UAB quickly bounced back with back-to-back wins on courts one and two, thanks to Kianoush and Ragon. Kianoush took down Daria Butorina, 6-1, 6-1, while Ragon earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Julie Angermann to earn the Blazers their second win of the day.
