CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The UAB women's tennis team took down Chattanooga, 4-1, on Saturday night at the McCallie School.
The Blazers (1-2) took down UTC for the first time since 2011 when they defeated the Mocs, 4-3.
"I'm extremely proud of our total team effort," head coach Mark Tija said. "I have a lot of respect for Chattanooga. They are a team that finished second in the Southern Conference last year and returned five seniors to the squad."
"We played with three freshmen and were able to defeat a team that none of the girls have," Tija added. "All in all, it was a very good, team win and it shows that we're headed in the right direction. This is just a starting point, but it shows that our hard work is paying off."
After falling on court one, UAB quickly bounced back as it jumped out to a 1-0 lead, thanks to doubles play by the tandems of freshmen Sophie Dodds Reghan Lynch on court two and junior Catherine Ragon and freshman McKenna Root on court three.
UTC knotted the match at 1-all due to a win on court three. The Blazers relentless fight pushed through as they took down the Mocs on courts four, five and six, thanks to Reagon, Dodds and Lynch, respectively, as UAB defeated Chattanooga in a complete team 4-1 win.
To open its season UAB faced No. 24 Georgia Tech and No. 40 Auburn. Next up, the Blazers welcome Georgia State at George Ward for a noon match on Saturday, Feb., 6.
