AUBURN, Ala. -
AUBURN, Ala. – The UAB women’s tennis team was unable to find its groove as it fell at Auburn Saturday afternoon, 7-0.
"Today was certainly an improvement from last week," women's head tennis coach Mark Tija said. "We played much better in doubles and managed a win wit hour freshmen Lynch and Dodds at No. 3. Those two have put in a good week of practice and it really paid off."
The freshmen doubles tandem of Sophie Dodds and Reghan Lynch claimed the Blazers’ lone victory of the day, 6-3, on the No. 3 court. Despite the victory on court three, the Blazers were unable to get the point as Paradis Kianoush and Elaine Simon fell on court No. 1, 6-3, to the No. 30 ranked doubles in ITA preseason polls. Then, Catherine Ragon and McKenna Root were defeated on court No. 2, 6-0.
In singles play, the Tigers earned a sweep en route to a 7-0 win. On court No. 1, Kianoush put up a fight, but was unable to find the final victory, falling 7-6, (7-0), 6-2. Against the No. 30 ranks singles played in ITA preseason polls, Simon fell 6-4, 6-1.
"Freshman McKenna Root went toe-to-toe with an NCAA singles participant and shows she can play with the better players in the region," Tija added."Kianoush played one of her better matches and was also right there in the first set, falling in a tiebreaker."
Dodds and Ragon dropped 6-3, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-4, respectively, on courts three and four. Lynch’s game was suspended as she trailed, 6-1.
"Overall, I was encouraged by our willingness to get out of our comfort zone and do things that are going to make us better. We can build on this match as we get ready for a very tough Chattanooga team next."
The Blazers take two weeks off, but continue their three-game opening swing at Chattanooga on Saturday, January 30, at 2 p.m.
