BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB men's basketball freshman guard Nick Norton, who scored a career-high 26 points against Charlotte last Thursday, has been named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
The honor represents the second-straight week a Blazer has earned the distintcion. Chris Cokley picked up Freshman of the Week honors after back-to-back 11-point efforts against LA Tech and Southern Miss two weeks ago.
"Nick is very deserving of this honor after putting together two great performances last week," head coach Jerod Haase said. "He is a tremendous person most of all, but is also a great teammate and leader for our team. Our guys are playing at a high-level right now, and Nick is a huge part of that."
Norton's 26 points last Thursday against Charlotte were the most points in a single game by a UAB freshman since Mo Finley scored 32 vs. Fresno State in 1999. The Bloomington, Ill., native scored 23 of those points in the second half after he hit 5-for-7 from 3-point range in the final 20 minutes and hit 6-for-7 at the free-throw line in the final minute against the 49ers.
In two games last week, Norton hit 60 percent (9-of-15) of his shots, including an 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) mark from 3-point range.
