TULSA, Okla. – The No. 18 UAB men’s soccer team went toe-to-toe with the No. 3 Virginia Cavaliers, but fell short, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon to close out the Holiday Inn Hurricane Classic in Tulsa, Okla.
"We played well for 75 minutes then lost our way," head coach Mike Getman said. "Overall we played well in both games but still have some things to improve on. That's why we play games like these. Hopefully it will payoff in the long run."
Senior Alex Clay netted his second goal of the year in the 55th minute when Rami Dajani dished the assist to give UAB a 1-0 lead.
Virginia, an NCAA Semifinal team from a year ago, fought back and struck in the 61st minute on a Kyle McCord goal to tie the match back up at 1-1. The Cavaliers then notched the game-winning goal 13 minutes later, a Sam Hayward goal in the 74th minute, to retake the advantage and seal the 2-1 win.
The two teams took just a combined three shots in the first half, as UAB finished with four shots and Virginia added 11 in the second period to total 12. UAB goalkeeper Joe Kuzminsky totaled six saves for the Blazers, while Rami Dajani led the team with two shots for one on-goal.
The Blazers will return to West Campus Field next weekend as they host the UAB Soccer For a Cure Classic. UAB will face Vermont Friday night and Dayton Sunday afternoon.
