BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Members of the UAB women’s soccer team will sit down with UABSports.com throughout the 2014 season to conduct Q&A’s. Check back with UABSports.com weekly for different features as the season progresses.
Today's Q&A features freshman Rachel Green, a native of Peachtree City, Ga. Below Green talks about her time in Birmingham and much more.
If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
“If I could travel anywhere in the world I would probably travel to Australia. I've never been out of the country so if I could travel anywhere I would want to be in an extremely unfamiliar setting and immerse myself in a completely different culture than what I'm accustomed to. Also, one of my favorite things to do is to scuba dive, and the Great Barrier Reef is easily the best scenery for that.”
Who has been the biggest influence on your career?
“The biggest influence on my soccer career would definitely be my parents. They've supported and funded my soccer practices, games and trips since I was four. They also helped my choice to play soccer at UAB, which was one of the best decisions I've ever made.”
The team won 11 games last year and advanced to the C-USA tournament for the first time since 2009, talk about how the success and turnaround from last year helps the team in moving forward this year?
“The record from the 2013 fall season only encourages and motivates us to continuously be better and win even more games than last year. Last year’s success prompts many high expectations for this upcoming season. If we put in the hard work at practice and perform that way on the field, there's no reason those expectations won't be met and exceeded.”
You play seven games on the road before hosting your first home game on Sept. 19, talk about how much of a grind that's going to be to continuously play on the road and be a little under halfway done with the season before you play at home.
“Since I'm a freshman, I really have no idea what it is like to constantly be traveling for soccer. Add in trying to juggle the workload from missed classes, and it presents a serious challenge. However, the upperclassmen on the team have reassured me that once you get into a flow you develop a method of balancing school with soccer. As far as traveling goes, I think mentally we just have to accept we will be visiting other teams, playing on their turf and knowing that there is no reason we can't play as well away as we would at home.”
