UAB Notes
The Series Against Davidson and Duke
UAB and Duke have met twice in program history, with the Blue Devils taking both matches that were held in 2005 and 2006.
Friday night’s contest at Davidson marks the first for UAB against the Wildcats.
Scouting The Opponents
Davidson enters Friday’s contest with a 1-1 record and lost its most recent contest, 4-0, to a tough No. 5 Virginia Tech team. The Wildcats defeated Winthrop to open the season and are led offensively by Vicky Bruce and Kate Joss who each have a goal. Rachel Locke is Davidson’s goalkeeper and has allowed four goals in 180 minutes with one shutout on the year.
The Duke Blue Devils, ranked No. 10 in the preseason poll, dropped their first two contests of the year at the UNC Nike Classic in Chapel Hill. Following exhibitions against South Carolina and UNC Wilmington to open the season, Duke dropped a 1-0 tilt to Ohio State and two days later fell 2-0 to No. 6 Stanford. Duke is averaging 14.5 shots per game going into the weekend with nine on goal in 29 attempts.
First Time For Everything (And Everyone)
Friday night’s season-opener at South Alabama marked a lot of firsts for many UAB women’s soccer players.
Six freshmen made their UAB debut Friday night in Mobile with four of them earning starts. Gabrielle Brokamp, Meredith Schertzinger, Bri Kuestersteffen and Samantha Craig all were part of the Blazers’ starting 11, picking up their first starts and playing time of their career.
Sophomore Sarah Morris, who took four shots her freshman season a year ago, notched her first career goal in Friday night’s match. After Johanna Liney tied things up in the second half to send the contest to double overtime, the Morris got an assist from freshman Gabrielle Brokamp to knock in the game-winning goal with 2.9 seconds left over South Alabama.
