BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Junior goalkeeper Angelica Jimenez of the UAB women's soccer team was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday morning.
The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native played a key role in UAB's 2-1 season-opening win at South Alabama Friday night. She totaled 12 saves in the match, including six saves over the final 20 minutes in the two overtime periods to hold the Jaguars' offense to just one goal on the night.
Friday night's match marked Jimenez' first start since Oct. 18 of last season against Charlotte. UAB defeated the Jaguars in dramatic fashion as sophomore Sarah Morris notched the game-winning goal with just 2.9 seconds left.
The Blazers return to action Friday, Aug. 29 at Davidson. UAB will then play Duke two days later on Sunday to complete the first two-match weekend of 2014.
