Energy and effort hasn’t often been a problem for the UAB men’s basketball team this season. On Saturday, though, UAB head coach Jerod Haase was bothered by both of those things from his team during the Blazers’ 74-67, Conference USA loss to East Carolina at Bartow Arena.
“We didn’t have enough resiliency to see the ball go through the net for them and come back to have the energy the next play,” Haase said. “Really good teams don’t have ebb and flow to their energy and effort and we had that tonight.”
Haase continued after fielding another question on the subject during the postgame media session.
“I don’t think we had complete, total commitment from everybody,” Haase said. “And I don’t know why. It is something that I will do everything in my power to make sure that it gets rectified. The effort and energy have to be constant.”
*Saturday’s attendance of 6,013 was the third largest Bartow Arena crowd this season. A crowd of 8,313 watched UAB’s win over North Carolina on Dec. 1 and 6,123 fans showed up to watch the Blazers’ loss to UTEP on Jan. 18.
*C.J. Washington was the most consistent offensive player for UAB on Saturday. He scored a team-high 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field, including 2-of-6 3-pointers, and 3-of-5 from the free throw line.
Washington bounced back from a rough couple of outings last weekend, when he combined for seven points, to average 22 points in two games this week. He also had 17 rebound in the two games this week.
*UAB point guard Chad Frazier scored 13 points on Saturday, marking the 19th time in 21 games that he reached double figures in scoring. He made at least one 3-pointer in 17 games this season, including two on Saturday.
*Freshman Tosin Mehinti gave UAB a lift during his 10 minutes on the floor. He had two points, six rebounds and two blocked shots.
*UAB fell to 11-2 at Bartow Arena this season. The only other home loss came in the C-USA setback to UTEP.
