BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men’s basketball team has partnered with The Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s of Alabama to raise awareness and money for pediatric cancer. As part of this initiative, the Blazers will wear two different colored Nike shoes throughout the 2014-2015 season.
During head coach Jerod Haase’s first season at UAB, the Blazers adopted a young cancer survivor named Elijah Seritt. Since then, Elijah and his family have been a major part of the Blazers’ men’s basketball program.
Elijah was just 19 months old when he was first taken to the emergency room and then referred to Children’s of Alabama, where a surgeon removed as much of Elijah’s tumor as possible. His diagnosis was medulloblastoma – an aggressive form of cancer. Elijah’s diagnosis included chemotherapy, two stem cell transplants and 17 surgeries—including two brain surgeries.
Before one of the games in Spain in the month of August, Coach Haase came up with the idea to take the next step in helping other children with pediatric cancer . The idea was sparked by a player on one of the Spanish squads wearing two different colors of sneakers during the game.
“We wanted to do something to recognize Elijah’s courageous battle and his role on our team,” said Haase. “We immediately thought wearing two different colors of shoes would cause fans to ask why and give us a perfect opportunity to raise awareness for pediatric cancer.”
Children’s of Alabama is a partner of UAB Athletics and a major part of the Birmingham community.
“This joint venture is a terrific way for us to recognize each others accomplishments and ultimately help the children who need it most,” said Dr. Raymond G Watts, Director, UAB Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology.
During all home regular season games during the 2014-2015 campaign the Blazers will play a special message to help raise fans awareness about the Pediatric Cancer at Children’s of Alabama and ask for fans support in raising funds.
