TROY, Ala.--The UAB softball team attempted a comeback in the sixth and seventh innings, but were unsuccessful as the Blazers fell, 2-1, to Troy on Tuesday night at the Troy Softball Complex.
"I think we got off to a slow start tonight," head coach Marla Townsend said. "Our defense was lax, and we made a few miscues that we do not normally have, and that makes the difference in the ballgame. Offensively, we had fifty-eight percent quality at-bats, so I'm pleased with where we were at the plate, the line drives we had, but it's a matter of us realizing that, in the grand scheme of things, this is a loss."
With the loss, UAB drops to 26-11 on the year, while Troy is now 20-23 on the season.
Sophomore Hayley Davis batted in UAB's lone run of the game as she came in to pinch hit in the top of the sixth following the Blazers loading the bases off three walks.
In the top of the seventh, UAB got runners on second and third with two outs before junior designated hitter Kristen McGrath struck out swinging to end the game.
Troy scored its two runs in the bottom of the third frame off thee hits and a Blazer error at first base. The first run was scored on a dropped fly by Kacie McAllister, and the second on a single up the middle by Caitlin Ortiz.
In the circle, junior Leigh Streetman (9-6) was credited with the loss as she gave up two runs and six hits in three innings. Junior Lannah Campbell entered the game in the fourth and threw the final three innings, giving up only three hits and no runs, while striking out four batters.
Each of Troy's three pitchers saw time in the circle with the starter, Jaycee Affeldt (6-2), picking up the win as she threw 4.2 innings and gave up five hits. Rachel Rigney threw two-thirds of an inning and gave up one run, while Sarah Thomas threw the final 1.2 innings and picked up the save.
"I think we're going to learn from tonight and become a better team because of it," Townsend said. "We'll have a nice off-day tomorrow and get back at it this weekend. I'm proud of the way they came back and battled late, but I think we're going to have to challenge some people to not get content and play every pitch."
Up next, UAB returns to the UAB Softball Field to host Conference USA foe UTEP for three games. Saturday's doubleheader is set for a 1 p.m. CT start, while Sunday's finale will start at Noon CT.
